ALBRIGHT ON WVU MEN’S BASKETBALL: No one blames you, miss

Photographers’ duties when taking pictures of a sporting event are not confined to game action. Crowd shots or bench photos often aid tone setting of a contest when used in newspapers, on websites or social media outlets. Floor rushing shots after major upsets are some of my favorites. No celebrations of any kind occurred for the home team after the WVU men were smashed by Texas, 73-53, Saturday evening. Bright smiles at the start of the game slowly melted off the faces of Old Gold and Blue fans in attendance who spent time and money to watch the debacle against the Longhorns. ...

ALBRIGHT: Patriots’ Mike Eddy leaving is a big loss

Wrestling, a fight between boys’ and girls’ basketball, and then comes into the picture football. The above ranking stands as the heirarchy of Parkersburg South High School’s Top 4 sports in order of importance. Sure football might fill the seats, but the grapplers’ and hoops’ teams are known for bringing home the state titles along with having the pick of the best athletes. Mike Eddy knew these facts when he took the gridiron reins from Jon Bolen after the 2012 season. He did not care. The architect of Gallia Academy’s turnaround during his four years at the ...

T. BENNETT: Don’t confuse me with Jay W.

Hello, my name is Tyler Bennett and I am the newest sports reporter here at The News and Sentinel. I was raised in Ravenswood, W.Va. where I graduated from Ravenswood High School in 2010. I knew that I wanted to do something in sports, but I wasn’t sure about what I could do after realizing I wasn’t destined for a six-inch growth spurt needed to make a career in playing after high school. Not sure what I wanted to do, I enrolled at West Virginia University at Parkersburg in the fall of 2010. After trying different fields during my time at WVU-P, I realized my career calling in ...

ALBRIGHT: Huntington St. Joe at PHS girls basketball: An epic showdown at the Fieldhouse

Parkersburg High students and PHS basketball or any basketball fans in the area mark down the Huntington St. Joe and PHS girls’ basketball match up at 7:30 p.m. Thursday as a must-watch contest. The two best teams in the state, regardless of class, clash in what promises to be an excellent game, along with the possibility of being labeled the game of the year. Big Reds’ Athletic Director Chris Way should strongly consider dropping the price of admission for all students to free. Opportunities to watch a cornucopia of NCAA Division I, II and III-ready athletes play on the same ...

Looking forward to sharing stories

My name is Josh Hughes, and I am the newest sports reporter here at The News and Sentinel. I grew up around the area, and I can’t wait to become more involved in the community. I graduated from Parkersburg High School in 2013 with my sights set on a career in covering sports. I always imagined having a job like this, and it is now a dream come true. After I graduated high school, I took those aspirations one step further. I enrolled at Marshall University in August 2013. I knew I wanted to pursue a job like this, but I also wanted to try my hand at broadcasting. I quickly became ...
