I will take a dot, too

Myriad of things on the mind, as per usual. The sports world — let alone the local scene — is crazy, and busy. It was something else to take in the opening act for Ravenswood’s 100th season of hoops. Mick Price secured career victory No. 699 Saturday versus Wirt County before a win Tuesday at Buffalo got him the big 7-0-0. It was the first of three throwback nights (1922-1969) for the Red Devils. More importantly, past legends and subs alike gathered to be celebrated. I’d need 1,500 words to describe it all, but it was exquisite. Without question, aside from ...

MYERS: WVU trounces Texas

Throughout the 2021 season, West Virginia football fans bemoaned the plays that weren’t made which prevented victories, but on Saturday the Mountaineers played one of their best games of the season in the home finale in defeating Texas 31-23. Three separate times the Longhorns scored touchdowns and appeared to be turning the momentum, but on each occasion the West Virginia offense answered. In the second quarter the Mountaineers went on a 12 play, 82 yard, six minute touchdown drive after Texas had cut the lead to 14-7. And after the Longhorns had closed to within a score twice in the ...

MYERS: WVU stalls out vs. OK St.

After two consecutive positive performances the West Virginia offense had some momentum going into Saturday’s matchup against Oklahoma State and opened the game with a 64 yard drive leading to a field goal. From then on it was like facing a train running downhill. The Cowboys defense, with nine senior starters, then displayed one of the most dominating performances on that side of the ball seen at Mountaineer Field. Playing against press man to man coverage on pass attempts, unlike the Iowa State zone defense the week before, the WVU receivers could not win their matchups. But it was ...

HUGHES: Marshall’s move to the Sun Belt makes perfect sense

HUNTINGTON — In the ever-changing landscape of college sports, you either evolve or get left behind. Evolution is exactly what Marshall accomplished with its move to the Sun Belt Conference. When the university made the upcoming move by no later than July 1, 2023, official last Friday, that set several more pieces into motion. It further eroded Marshall’s former home, Conference USA, which is down to five member schools following the departures of schools like Old Dominion, Southern Miss and the Herd. That’s compounded with the departures of Charlotte, Rice, UTSA, Florida Atlantic, ...

Albright: Undefeated Doddridge football doing it differently than 2019 group

They stood larger than much of the classification. Hunter America, Cole James and the 2019 Doddridge County football team ruled the Class A roost. The Bulldogs dominated everyone on the way to a 10-0 regular-season record. If they wanted to run for 400 yards in a game, they could. Putting up 65 points? No problem. Match them up with a dominant Williamstown program? They came out on top and in impressive style, no less. Then graduations happened. Departures and new faces in new places sapped the bullying ability. Bobby Burnside and company no longer shouted out a number and ...

TUESDAY MORNING QUARTERBACK: Hope has left building

Although losing three of their first five games West Virginia football fans still had some hope. The losses had been close. The team was competitive. There was a chance it could turn the corner and still grab some wins. But after the wreckage of a 45-20 loss at Baylor on Saturday hope has left the building. There was nothing Mountaineer faithful saw that gave them any reason for optimism with half of the 2021 season remaining. The defense, which at times had played very well in earlier games, was shredded for 525 yards. Baylor touchdown scoring drives were all of 2, 8, 5, 5, 3 and 6 ...
