MYERS: RB White opens eyes at WVU

Freshman running back Jaheem White opened eyes on Saturday with a breakout performance helping lead West Virginia to a comfortable 37-7 thrashing of BYU. White gained 146 yards on just 16 carries and showed lightning speed. CJ Donaldson also looked more like his old self and had a 100-yard day with two touchdowns. They gave the offense a thunder and lightning look and led the Mountaineers to their most productive game of the 2023 season. MYERS: Miracle TD burns WVU

It was an unbelievable double miracle game. Unfortunately it had a wrong ending. West Virginia was down three points facing fourth-and-10 from midfield with no timeouts and only seconds remaining. The only reasonable hope was to be able complete a pass for a first down and kick a long field goal to take the game to overtime. But quarterback Garrett Greene hit Hudson Clement in stride, who then outraced the Houston secondary for a touchdown with just 12 seconds remaining. MYERS: WVU coming off bye

The West Virginia Mountaineers have achieved a better than expected 4-1 record entering last weekend’s bye on the schedule. Three of those wins over Pitt, Texas Tech and TCU were achieved with solid defense and special teams play. But most of all, these games have been decided by making winning plays in the final minutes—-stopping Texas Tech on four pass plays from the 11-yard line and blocking two late TCU field goal attempts. Last weekend at Mingo Bottom Golf Club the finishing touches on the inaugural class for the Wirt County Sports Hall of Fame finally came to fruition. MYERS: Mountaineers flying under radar

West Virginia University football will be flying “under the radar” in the upcoming 2023 season. In fact, if we listen to the so called pundits out there the Mountaineers won’t just be hard to locate on the radar, they won’t even be able to get off the ground. The preseason media poll picked WVU dead last in what is now a 14 team Big 12 Conference. Reputable football publications are projecting them in the bottom three in the league.
