Kiki’s Corner: Summer weather takes over the Mid-Ohio Valley

Finally, nice weather is here with hot days and heavy rain, although I don’t think many feel that they are lucky with the rain that we had a few days ago. How do you like it? Should we complain? We’d better think back in the winter when we had all the snowy days and thank our lucky stars for nice weather. As for myself, I love the seasons and all the changes.

Honestly, I’d rather have hot days than snow and ice because we are blessed that we have houses and cars with air conditioning, and you really don’t feel the heat unless you’re one of those workers who have to work outdoors. That has to be hard. I hope they’re getting paid well.

In one way, it’s good for many of you who have vegetable gardens and flowers, because they need water. It’s hard for those guys who cut the grass for a living, and they can’t keep up with it. My grass is so high right now with all the rain. My gardener said to me when I called him yesterday, “If I come and cut the grass earlier, I will damage your yard with my heavy lawnmower and equipment.” I understand his point, but this is the time for them to make money.

Last year, I didn’t bother to buy flowers because of the deer. This year, I thought I would try one more time, and I was hoping I would fool them. I got hanging baskets, and believe it or not, every night I put them in my garage and take them out in the morning. It is getting old to do that day in and day out. So one night I was tired, and I left them outside. To my huge surprise and my big disappointment, the smart deer made their visit that night. So when I woke up and checked my flowers the next morning, guess what, there were no flowers on my hanging baskets. I concluded that the deer are smarter than I thought they were. They don’t bother to come close to the petunias and geraniums because they know better.

I know it’s late, but you know what they say: better late than never. I want to thank all my friends for their generous contributions to the Wood County Society Telethon. Their support was greatly appreciated.

If I miss any names, I apologize.
