Get all tied up the right way by crafting your own scrunchies

Maurita the Crochet Lady here. This month you can get all tied up making scrunchie hair ties.

I use regular worsted weight yarn, H 5.0mm hook, and “ouchless” hair ties that do not have a metal fastener.

The first scrunchie has loops, and the second looks like a rounded star. These can also be used as cute stretchy bracelets.

If you want to try to make a smaller-sized one for a person with thinner hair, you can use baby -or- fingering weight yarn, F 3.75mm hook, and a medium-sized hair tie. Also, you can change colors each round, but make sure to hide the yarn tails but allow the scrunchie to stretch.

Notes: The base hair scrunchie can be made and used without the added rounds crocheted. The base is also used for both scrunchies. Try not to work the base too tight so it allows the hair tie to stretch. When starting the base round, I hold the hair tie in the middle so it looks almost like a figure eight and work my stitches in the top section, then move around as the stitches fill the band.

Stitches: ST= stitch, SL ST= slip stitch, SC= single crochet, SC INC= single crochet increase= 2SC worked into the same space, DC= double crochet, TRC= treble -or- triple crochet, CH= chain, CH SP= chain space, [ …to… ]= work what is inside the [ … ] the number of times listed -or- in the space/ stitch listed. ( …to… ) are also used like [ …to… ] but are often used inside the [brackets] like I have done in RND4 of the rounded star scrunchie directions.

DIRECTIONS:

BASE: RND1: 30SC over hair tie, SL ST in first ST to close. RND2: (SC, SC INC) around, SL ST in first ST to close.

LOOP SCRUNCHIE: RND3: (SC, CH10, skip 1ST, SC) around, join with SL ST into first ST to close ring. Fasten off and hide yarn tail.

ROUNDED STAR SCRUNCHIE: RND3: (SC, CH3, skip ST, SC) around, join with SL ST in first ST to close. Note there will be two single crochets next to each other.

RND4 NOTE: inside ( ) there will be a section of stitches that are all grouped together inside a CH-3 space … and all of the directions will also be inside [ ] because it is repeated around the entire scrunchie. So, inside [ ] will be a rounded star point and two CH2 bumps… and… the ( ) will be the directions to make the actual rounded star point that is worked inside a CH3 space.

RND4: [(SC, DC, 2TRC, CH2, 2TRC, DC, SC) in CH3 space, CH2, SC in next CH3 space, CH2, SC in next CH3 space, CH2] repeat around to complete five rounded star points and five double bumps between them, join with SL ST to close. Fasten off and hide yarn tails.

I hope you enjoy making and wearing these hair scrunchies.

Happy crocheting.
