Last week I had two special friends of mine visiting the new Parkersburg High School cross country locker room at the PHS Annex
One was Dr. Torie Jackson — president of West Virginia University at Parkersburg, and Olivia Reeder, vice president of Institutional Advancement at WVUP.
To my surprise I received a picture of the two ladies and my son George. Dr. Jackson also sent me a picture of the new locker room along with the entire 40 members of this year’s PHS Cross Country Team.
Below is the speech that Dr Torie Jackson presented to the team:
Today, I had the privilege of speaking to the PHS Big Red Cross Country team before practice, and it reminded me so much of the lessons running teaches us all.
I told them about cheering for my own sons on tough courses, about the struggles my family faced when I was their age, and about the odd jobs I worked just to afford the basics. I shared that my journey to becoming a college president was not one anyone could have predicted. It wasn’t a straight path, and it certainly wasn’t easy. However, it was built on perseverance, faith, and the belief that challenges can shape us, not stop us.
I reminded them, as I want to remind anyone reading this, that the only thing that can truly hold us back is our own self-doubt. Life will throw hills in your path, just like in a cross country race. You may want to quit halfway up, but if you dig deep, if you choose to keep going, you’ll find you are stronger than you thought.
To the Big Reds: thank you for letting me share my story with you. Remember, every step, on the course and in life, is part of a greater journey. You can accomplish absolutely anything you set your mind to.
I get so excited to see young adults support school children, and students of all ages academically and in sports and advising them to be strong individuals with characteristics and great personalities. Those people who choose education as one of their professions know there is a need out there and when they help in different ways give them extra satisfaction inside, knowing and hoping if not just for all but just a few of those students would listen to their teachers, principals, coaches, etc.
Let’s face it, to be a teacher is not an easy job. It takes a lot of skill, passion, understanding, and in general to have kindness and to share all that with your students.
Children need love, attention and someone to listen. Also they need encouraging words and if they don’t hear them from parents, they turn to grandparents, counselors, and teachers, and I hate to say sometimes they ask advice from a friend and that’s not always a good idea.
Make sure to try to always make your child feel important, that way you build confidence in them, and they will carry that through their adult life.
I think a child will remember more a kind and encouraging word and praise from someone instead of a negative comment. There are some words that you can use to make your child feel good.
You are special and unique, You’re intelligent and you have what it takes to be successful. I’m proud of you! I love you! You can change the world!
Honestly, it’s not only children, but adults also like to hear those words as well.
There is a tough world out there and no one will take care of your child as much as you ,so don’t ignore it. take the time and be passionate with them. At the same time, make them feel needed.
Unfortunately, one discouraging word can change your child’s attitude.
At the same time make sure you discipline your children. It takes wisdom and empathy, and it takes a good supply of patience. Kids at times act disrespectful and disobedient. Don’t ignore it, do something and do it quick before it’s too late.
