I would like to re-introduce myself and this column as we begin our second year of publication and partnership with The Parkersburg News and Sentinel.
I'm Katie Nestor. I teach English, Advanced Communications, and Debate and Forensics at Parkersburg South High School. I also coach our school Speech and Debate team, sponsor our chapter of National Honor Society and am the school coordinator for Poetry Out Loud. These are just some of the metaphorical work-related hats that I wear on a given day. After I finish with afternoon bus duty supervision, I quickly 'change hats' as I morph back into my role of wife and mom until it's bedtime for two bright-eyed little girls. Occasionally, after the bedtime routine is complete, I make time to throw on my final hat of the day -- my 'reader and writer' hat and allow myself to enjoy some of my favorite hobbies for a little while.
We are very pleased and thankful to have this space again. This column is a platform for our Wood County students, staff, and professionals to share their thoughts, interests, and passions with the community over the next several months! This year, we are pleased to share that there will be several features written by local high school journalism students working on perfecting their craft and finding their voice and style as writers.
Aside from having their work published and having a venue to express their thoughts, though both huge benefits, I think it is important to note that the writers that contribute to this publication aren't seeking or gaining anything in return. This means there are no grades given or extra credit points awarded, and class time is not spent writing or editing these submissions.
For those of you that are seeing this column for the first time, you'll find School of Thought weekly in the Saturday/Sunday publication of The Parkersburg News and Sentinel. School of Thought is primarily a student-written op-ed column that varies in topicality, and occasionally features the work of local coaches, teachers, administrators, and professionals within our community.
