From a small nation comprised of only thirteen states and 2.5 million people in 1776, the United States of America has grown into the richest, most powerful nation on Earth. We now have 50 states, about 350 million people, a gross domestic product of $32.5 trillion and the largest, most technologically advanced, and most expensive military in the world. Since WWII we have been considered the best at many things -- the Olympics, for example -- but today we have our problems.

Our national debt is $40.61 trillion. Check out the USDebtclock.com/live to find out what every American owes on this debt. As of the time I wrote this, each of us owe over $121,000.

Mass shootings are, tragically and sadly, growing routine. Gas, food, housing and home heating oil prices are high and our pay isn't keeping pace. Today, our government, once respected throughout the world under the Obama and Biden administrations, is now an embarrassment, and our President is, by any standard, the most corrupt and worst ever in American history.

The current Republican Congress is the least productive ever, having failed to pass any significant piece of legislation that benefits our citizens. Our health care system remains the world's best, but our health insurance system is the worst among industrial countries, yet Trump and Congress have done nothing to fix it. Billionaires are growing richer and more powerful and many of the rest of us are growing poorer.

We are in a war with Iran started by President Trump. At the same time, a war between Russia and Ukraine continues to rage; and let us not forget the Israel-Palestinian War. Both with thousands dying daily, both with the U.S. neglecting to stop through diplomacy, aide or mediate.

Our president seems to obsess over a huge ballroom, a large arch in Washington, winning a Nobel prize he's done nothing to earn, enriching himself, his family and the wealthy, and getting his toxic name plastered on the famed Kennedy Center. Not only is Trump horrible, but his entire cabinet is too. Pete Hegseth, for example, has fired numerous top career military generals and admirals, and now he and President Trump are leading a rudderless ship

It's time for a change, a huge change. Nov. 3 is an important day on our calendars. It will be, without question, the most crucial midterm election ever in U.S. history. American voters have a choice: keep the disastrous current administration -- corrupt and ineffective as they are -- or change to a newer, compassionate, intelligent and more ethical Congress.

Our state and local governments have problems too. AI has become a troublesome issue, as has these data centers popping up everywhere, with one being built in neighboring Mason County. In West Virginia, Gov. Morrisey is both brilliant and horrible. In Wood County, our County Commission is doing a good job as is the City of Vienna, while the City of Parkersburg's leadership is confused and only marginally competent.

Right now polls are open for early voting and those of us who care about our future will vote on or before Nov. 3. It's time to turn America blue again and restore our status as the best, most powerful country on Earth once again! It's time to earn the respect of the entire world once again!
