Forty trillion dollars is what the national debt has now risen to. That is a lot of money; about $115,000 for every American, including those just born who will have to work harder all their lives trying to pay it down.
This is mostly on Republicans, the so-called fiscal conservatives. There's the very expensive unwinnable war started by Bush and Trump. There are the massive tax giveaways for the rich, started by Reagan, made worse by Bush and now far worse by Trump. Add to that the $75 billion given to ICE, the $20 billion given to a tin horn dictator in Argentina, the list goes on and on the way Trump throw money around.
The Republicans in Congress won't stop him. Maybe they want to see the debt get so high that they can say sorry, we just can't afford any more the things that benefit all of us; things like Social Security, health care, schools, national parks, infrastructure.
The exploding national debt is unsustainable and has to be reversed. What we can do now to slow down the bleeding is to elect a Democratic Congress in November. Then in two years, vote in a moderate Democrat president.
