Letter to the Editor: Keep on doing it

When the band my sister and brother-in-law are in play a certain song, several of us do the Electric Slide. Tonight we were listening to another band play the same song and I got up to do the dance. Apparently, it is so old none of the patrons knew what it was. So here I am dancing all alone and a man about my son's age decided I needed a dance partner. I stopped line dancing and danced across from him. He was all into it, shaking around having a good time. Some of the people who were there with him, began laughing so hard I could hear them over the band. I decided what the heck, have a good time, go with it. While we danced, he asked my name. I replied. Then he introduced himself. He asked how old I was so I told him 73. He seemed impressed. I definitely look at least that if not older so I knew he wasn't trying to flirt. He was just showing an old lady a good time on the dance floor. I didn't worry what my husband thought because he doesn't rock n roll dance and this fellow wasn't hurting anyone. I had a nice time.
We only go to membership type of clubs like the American Legion, VFW, and the Moose Lodge. They have strict rules about excessive drinking, a dress code, and other general behavior standards. I never worry about leaving my things on the table while I dance or that anyone would hurt me on purpose. Over the years we have made so very many friends out like this. We can't go to any of these places without being spoken to by name whenever we walk in or go to leave. Some people may think it is wrong to go to "bars" where alcohol is served. Of course, just because it is served doesn't mean I have to choose it over a can of pop. I go to socialize but mostly to dance. I don't feel there is anything wrong with the location. My intentions and how I behave are what make it all right to go out like this.
As we get older, it is important to stay active. If you played sports you may need to modify what you do, but keep it up. If you like to take walks, keep walking. You may not go as far or as fast but don't stop walking. With me, it is dancing. I don't ever want to stop getting my exercise through dance so my husband takes me out to enjoy the music. I encourage you to keep living every day with enthusiasm for what you love to do. Help make the world a wonderful place to be.
