Letter to the Editor: Worth a mention
I would like to discuss the recent announcement by the WVSWA of the boys basketball Class A all-state teams and those players given honorable mention all-state.
First of all, I want to congratulate the only two Wood County players honored on the all-state teams. Luke Anderson was selected first team and Preston Randolph was selected honorable mention. They both were major contributors to a great season for the Parkersburg Catholic Crusaders. Both of these players were so deserving of their honors.
The reason for my letter to the editor and, particularly, the sportswriters of the WVSWA who had the responsibility to vote and select those players who deserved to be recognized for their excellent efforts during the 2025-26 season. One other player in Wood County who so deserved to, at the minimum, be named to the honorable mention list.
His name is Asher Fenton of Wood County Christian School in Williamstown. Asher was a senior, tri-captain, and the “quarterback” point guard for his team. Asher averaged, per game, 15.5 points, 5.1 assists (leader in 1A OVAC), 4.1 rebounds, and 3.2 steals. He has an amazing basketball skillset ahead of most of the players he played against.
He exhibited great talent and leadership, leading his team in many categories, proven by the great stats he put together in his senior year. I am so disappointed that all of you West Virginia sportswriters didn’t do your homework across the entire state, covering every county and team (not just mainly the real successful teams) before voting for those players who deserved all-state recognition.
It’s a shame that an overly deserving point guard from small Wood County Christian School named Asher Fenton didn’t get honored after a great senior season.
