Letter to the Editor: To my guardian angel

I wanted to publicly thank an “angel” with last name of Lorenzo (I believe that is what he told me at the time) for coming to my rescue on the evening of March 31, just before sunset.

I am 83 and not very mobile these days. About 6:30 p.m. I decided to go out into my yard to admire a pink dogwood tree and a redbud both in their full glory. I took my rollator and cell phone. As I headed back to my porch I stopped at a flower bed up against the front of my home where I “plant” silk flowers in lava gravels each year now that I can no longer do the real ones. I don’t know what happened next. Suddenly my forehead painfully slammed into the side of the house and then I ended up in the bed with one arm pinned under me against the sharp lava rocks. It took a while before I gained enough sense and strength to get my arm free and body turned enough to halfway sit up in the bed with my legs hanging over the bed wall. I was in pain from head to toe. I looked around my small neighborhood for any sign of life knowing by 6 p.m. everyone would be inside for the night by now. I cried out as loudly as possible for help over and over while praying for God to send me help. Soon it would be dark and I didn’t like thoughts of being in that spot all night long plus no coat on for the cold night and rain due.

My head was swelling and pain increasing. Being on blood thinner I figured it wise to go to ER to be checked out ASAP. I estimated half an hour had passed and another half an hour at most before darkness. In this time one vehicle had driven by. I reminded God time was short and I needed a miracle. Finally a car appeared slowly and not only the window looked like it was open but I didn’t hear any music playing to drown out my cries so I called out and waved my arm frantically. The driver looked like he heard me and searched, probably wondering if he really heard right. When he spotted me I called again and started saying out loud “Thank you, Jesus, for sending an angel!” The “angel” came over to see what happened and asked what he could do. I asked him to call an ambulance as it would take more than one person to get me up and I needed to go to the ER.

While we waited for the rescue squad he told me he was 18 and I believe he was driving by looking for a mower that was for sale and I think his last name was Lorenzo. (Later a neighbor told me he didn’t know who would have a mower for sale??) Perhaps he was an angel with “hidden wings” as a song I heard later says!

The Bible says we have often entertained angels unaware. Hebrew 13:2. Anyway, I can’t thank him enough and do hope somehow he will see this letter. I still have pain and bruises to keep reminding me how I came close to maybe not surviving.

AND I want to remind others who live alone to check into a life alert device. No matter your age anything can happen and I know of three people just this winter that were found too late. I am definitely ready to get one. It’s long over due. My family will feel better when I do. I thought all I needed was a cell phone but it landed beyond reach when I went down.
