Letter to the Editor: Good for whom?

Why is it called “Good Friday?” Why not bad Friday? It certainly was not good for Jesus. Yesterday (at this writing) was the day we commemorated when Jesus Christ died on the cross over 2,000 years ago. But it was good for Jesus because He was obedient to His Father and willingly went to the cross.

But, why did he go to the cross? Well, He went to the cross to pay our sin debt. God said it took a perfect sacrifice and Jesus was the only choice. He had committed no sin ever, was perfect in all ways and was the “spotless lamb of God.” Listen, if Jesus had not gone to the cross, we would have had to pay our sin debt ourselves. Do you really want to do that?

But our sacrifice would have been in vain and would not have covered our filthy sins. Good Friday is GOOD for us. The Bible says, “But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.” Isaiah 64:6 KJV. Our efforts at living right, righteousness, fall short because we are sinful. Our efforts at living right, as we say, are a stench in the nostrils of God. But, when we accept Jesus as our Savior, our sins are covered by his shed blood.

There are some who say we can just be good and we can get to heaven. Who determines if we are good? What if we are not good enough? If you can get to heaven by being good, why did Jesus die on the cross?

There are also those who say that they will “come to Jesus” when they get their lives straightened out. But that will not happen. Jesus said come as you are. He is willing and able to save those who are lost. Some fret about using a lot of Bible verses to explain salvation. But, the old familiar one, John 3:16, still works. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that WHOSOEVER (this means you and me) believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” John 3:16 KJV.

We all will live forever. We choose one of two places. Heaven or Hell. It is your choice. Choose Jesus TODAY.
