Letter to the Editor: A solution for Parkersburg City Council

(Letter to the Editor - Photo Illustration - MetroCreativeConnection)

Since the beginning of the year we have seen public forum on the agenda more times than needed. Every adjustment seeming to just add to the negative public perception of the council. I have watched and spoke to the council and public side and listened to their issues. Here is my proposed solution to the matter addressing both sides of the issue. I have sent this to all the members of council and hope they seriously consider it.

To The Members of Parkersburg City Council,

Every adjustment made to public and council forums has unfortunately backfired, creating a more negative perception of our city rather than improving it. While meetings may now run more “smoothly,” the image of the city we love is slowly deteriorating.

Open dialogue, transparency, and a visible demonstration of care and concern for citizens are the only ways to begin repairing this divide. Right now, we need unity and positivity more than ever for the livelihood of our great city. A city without engaged residents or pride quickly becomes one where people feel stuck until they can leave, rather than a place they want to invest in, believe in, and help thrive.

After listening to complaints and concerns from both sides, I’ve drafted two proposed resolutions designed to build a bridge of respectful communication between council members and the people you represent:

Proposed Resolution 1 — Public Forum Structure

≤ Public forum will begin with agenda items first, followed by non-agenda items.

≤ Each public speaker will have 3 minutes.

≤ After each speaker, one council member may provide a 1-minute reply if necessary.

≤ The total combined time for public speaking and council replies will not exceed 40 minutes.

Proposed Resolution 2 — Restore Council Forum

≤ Bring back Council Forum, allowing 2 minutes per council member to share updates on POSITIVE events, initiatives, and developments in their district.

Recommended Agenda Order

≤ Council Forum – Start the meeting with updates and positive news.

≤ Public Forum – Provide citizens the opportunity to share thoughts, with optional council replies to clarify concerns.

≤ Message from the Mayor – Allow the mayor to address public concerns, provide additional updates, or clarify misinformation.

When we endeavor to understand each other, we foster empathy, compassion, and trust. Clear communication and mutual respect will allow both council and citizens to feel heard and valued.

This is how we restore pride in our city and work together toward a stronger, more unified Parkersburg.

Thank you for your time and consideration.
