Problem with HJR 3020

House Joint Resolution (HJR) 3020 calls for all the Christian Bible to be formally recognized as the “inerrant foundational document for our society and government.”

I believe scripture is useful for many things, but law is not one. As stated in 2 Timothy 3:16; “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness.”

Legally the Christian Bible needs to be defined. Is my version (translation) more Christian than yours? Is the Bible “all Scripture,” or is it only selected books chosen by my denomination or some ancient council? Wars have been fought over different interpretations of the Bible. Both sides in World War I and II used the Bible to justify their cause.

Some passages are difficult to hear. Maybe this is what it means to be “useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training.” An example is Psalm 52:

“You tyrant, why do you boast of wickedness against the godly all day long? You plot ruin; your tongue is like a sharpened razor, O worker of deception. You love evil more than good and lying more than speaking the truth. You love all words that hurt, O you deceitful tongue. Oh, that God would demolish you utterly, topple you, and snatch you from your dwelling, and root you out of the land of the living! The righteous shall see and tremble, and they shall laugh at him, saying, ‘This is the one who did not take God for a refuge, but trusted in great wealth and relied upon wickedness.'”

This psalm is titled “To the Chief Musician. A Contemplation of David when Doeg the Edomite went and told Saul, and said to him, ‘David has gone to the house of Ahimelech.'”

In the psalm David describes his contemplations on the events of 1 Samuel 21-22. Saul, wanting to kill David, ordered Doeg to kill the priests and others at the tabernacle after Doeg tattled to Saul that they had aided David.

(I am told that Doeg is pronounced with a soft G sound, like that of J.)

Are we going to be required to march in process up to the Capitol chanting Psalm 52?
