Parenting is not a trivial pursuit when it comes to living among people. Harmony of getting along can be related to determination as well as what one is taught.

Recently, there have been many comments about Mr. Harrison Butker’s commencement address. The famous Kansas City Chiefs kicker gave a thought-provoking speech. Yes, indeed Mr. Harrison Butker is wise beyond his years. His thought provoking address. His acknowledgment of value of our children as well as our nurturing them to become good citizens. It is the responsibility of their parents. He points out as to how important mothers are to children. He attributes his success to his upbringing.

As my late husband, Melvin Hoover and I started our journey together; we had to decide what is important in life. He was a chemical engineer and I a schoolteacher. After we started having children, we decided that my most important occupation was being a mother. When our children were grown up and made their life pursuits, we had reached retirement. As it often happens, age brings with it wear on our bodies. Melvin developed heart issues. After one of Mel’s episodes, he wrote an open letter mirroring his life.

“An open letter to my wife, my children, grandchildren and many helpful people during my recent set of problems. No one knows better than I do how the pathway started for me to this venture called ‘family.’ It did start with a general idea of what ‘family’ should consist of. Not how many boys or how many girls, how smart, charming, or other unique assets require a fixed personality. It did start with each child would be his or her own personality within the family unit.

“They would pick their own careers, mates and make many of their own decisions. Hoping that the mates they choose would work into the family unit.

“During periods of semi consciousness, sedation and partially clear consciousness, I saw a family devoid of jealousy and pettiness of superego. Standing ready to act in the best interest of the unity … acting without regard to the magnitude of the task or what needed to be done.

“Many times in the past, we have come close, but I could tell from your mother/grandmother that we were there since she has contributed so much direction.

“God knows I love you all together and as individuals.

“Dad”

It has been ten years since Melvin Hoover died. His family and many friends feel his presence, his caring to listen and help where he was able.
