Letter to the Editor: A note to the Parkersburg High School Class of 1954

This communication is to commemorate the 70th anniversary of our graduation. (It is also being sent via an outdated mailing list, with the hope it reaches most of our classmates.)
These were wonderful, formative years, characterized by fun activities in and out of the classroom. Although time has dimmed specific details, we continue to have strong reflections of the cherished feelings from many years ago. They far outweigh the inevitable difficult times which were also a part of our lives, serving to help us develop individual characters.
After graduation, several reunions were planned and perfectly executed by a dedicated group of classmates. Our heartfelt thanks to each of you. While we have our own personal memories of the reunions, who can forget Bob Dakin and Gary Clinton jumping off the riverboat into the Ohio River? Or the two poems written by Patsy Dotson Evans Pittman, which perfectly described our PHS days, plus the following years.
Unfortunately, it is no longer feasible to have reunions. This is our final formal class communication.
As we are in the Fall of our lives, we pause to honor the memories of those no longer with us. These memories remain forever and put a song in our hearts.
Our class motto, "We build the ladder by which we rise," is as appropriate today as it was in 1954. Now, perhaps, we should update it to "We have built the ladder by which we have risen."
Our building days are behind us and it is time to enjoy the results of our labors. In so doing, we hope it brings you peace and profound happiness, accompanied by tolerable health.
