Letter to the Editor: Feeling the call to school board service

As a former teacher and coach in the Wood County School system for over 30 years, I paid attention to the issues, challenges, and activities of our school system, some of which concern me.
Over the years, I have worked with many outstanding education and sports professionals, however, it is obvious our local school system is facing challenges.
After receiving my degree from Glenville State College in education, I began my career at Williamstown Elementary. Through my career I also taught at Franklin and Mineral Wells and became involved in elementary and middle schools sports programs. Through these sports programs a gym club was formed to allow students the opportunity to expand their participation in physical activities. It was through this program that the River Valley Skippers Jump Rope Team ultimately traveled the country and the world.
Having both taught and coached in several Wood County schools, I have seen all aspects of our county system. As a lifelong resident of our county, and having attended and worked in Wood County schools, I have remained interested in our educational system.
The school system faces challenges. From school closures, personnel issues, school consolidations, staff layoffs and budgeting issues, I feel the calling to try to help. It is my desire to run for the Wood County Board of Education in the fall election.
I believe my experience and career uniquely qualifies me to serve and to bring experience to the Board of Education. As a former teacher, coach and most importantly a parent of three children, all who attended Wood County schools, I believe I have the understanding of both the strength and problematic issues that need to be addressed.
My goal would be to be a part of improving our county school system, and to do so keeping in mind we must spend our tax dollars wisely.
Over the next four months I plan to talk to and listen to parents, educators, and the citizens of our community regarding any concern they might have. I will make myself available and be open and honest about how we might improve our school system. It is obvious, educating our children properly is paramount. I sincerely hope to assist in this endeavor in a positive way.
