I was incredulous to read Ms. Myer's column in the April 28 edition entitled, "Misogyny is alive and well." Apparently so is twisting words! Ms. Myer proceeded to take umbrage re: Gov. Justice's comments made in reference to girls competing against boys in athletics - only she quickly dismissed the athletics reference and "other sentences." She instead insinuated that anyone who suggests that girls cannot compete with boys' brains must be ignorant and completely misinformed. How in the world did she deduce that thought from the governor's words?
I'm a senior citizen and even I understood that Gov. Justice was referring solely to athletics. I was of the generation who lobbied for equal rights for women. We were the generation who challenged WHY women did not have the same (or lack of) dormitory hours as men; did not have as many athletic teams/scholarships as men; could not wear slacks/pants to work; did not receive equal pay for equal effort. And yet, we also understood the physiological differences between men/boys and women/girls. We wanted our own teams and a level playing field - pun intended. We certainly understood that we were already equal in the classroom and working world!
Absolutely NOTHING Gov. Justice said implied that girls are "at a significant disadvantage" in any venue other than athletics nor did he make my "blood boil." In fact, your column turned my crank up a couple of notches because it was so far off the mark that I had to re-read it and put my girly jaw back in place. Sorry that Ms. Myer has been demoralized to the degree that she believed we women needed a pep-talk so that we could shed our feelings of disadvantage and forego protection by the men in our lives. She should save the editorializing, presumptuous statements re "what we tell young women today" for those who have been living under a rock for the last 55 years (my college days). We fought for Title IX, but girls if you can compete physically at sports on a boys' team go for it! We already know that you can compete intellectually and academically with anyone! That's what we tell young women today.
