Ban knee-jerk reactions

(Letter to the Editor - Photo Illustration - MetroCreativeConnection)

Recently, a man and a woman showed how little they know about firearms. The man (I believe a member of Congress) said some of the AR-15s (not assault rifles) are capable of shooting 30 rounds a second. Really? The woman, a Supreme Court associate justice, said they are capable of shooting 800 rounds per second. They obviously do not know what they are talking about.

Yes, they are upset over the gun violence in America, but to make insane and impossible assertions about guns does not help. An AR-15 shoots one round each time the trigger is pulled. These people think by banning certain guns and making it virtually impossible for honest citizens to buy them will solve the mass shooting problems. It will not. Punishing the honest, law-abiding people will not stop criminals from getting guns. Criminals will beg, borrow, or steal whatever guns they want. Guns don’t kill people. People who do not value human life kill people. Plain and simple. I like to shoot guns as a sport. I do not hunt, but rather want home protection and like sport shooting. I may not approve of some hobbies of others, but it is not my business if it is legal. What I do is my business.

Applying the same logic about guns to drunk drivers, then it makes sense that eliminating cars will solve the drunk driving problem. Solving gun problems and drunk driving problems is a matter of personal responsibility. If a person wants to drink (and I do not) and drive; passing a law punishing me by doing away with cars so people do not drive drunk will not stop them. Same for guns. I am a responsible gun owner and secure guns at home. Criminals do not.

As long as society has this knee-jerk reaction every time a shooting occurs, the problem will continue to exist. The truth is we live in a sinful, fallen world and it is not going to get better. How about the next time someone is stabbed to death, just start talking about doing away with knives? That would not work either. It is a problem of morality, and some do not have a good moral example to follow. The real problem is that these people do not have a relationship with Jesus Christ.

Turn to Jesus today before it is too late.
