Letter to the Editor: Is it a secret?

It finally caught up with me. I was playing Monopoly with a friend, exchanging play money and sharing dice the day before he started feeling sick. He tested negative for COVID but two days later tested positive. The night before he could call to tell me, I started losing my voice and coughing. In the morning I went to MedExpress thinking I was getting my usual laryngitis or tonsillitis to hear I had COVID. Touching Monopoly game pieces was the only connection we had different than my husband, who is glad he doesn't like to play the game. So far he is still well.

I'm thankful for phones where germs don't travel. I'm using it so much the battery keeps going dead. I called anyone who I could have exposed before I knew I was getting ill. Stands to reason you can be contagious before you feel bad. Three doctor's appointments had to be rescheduled. I could be sewing but my machine messed up while I was working on a sequin vest for New Year's Eve. When I'm better I'll take it for repair. That means sewing is not an option. During the week, three women were supposed to come by, so I canceled with them. I'm staying in the living room to keep away from my husband. Guess I didn't realize how much I have planned most of the time with other people. Knowing I have to quarantine is more painful than being sick.

A couple of years ago my husband and about 12 other people we know of caught COVID on New Year's Eve. Not knowing what he had I took care of him for five days while he ran a fever before taking him to the emergency room. I didn't catch it. No one called to tell us they were ill. After telling them about him we discovered several others were under the weather. We decided everyone had been together on the 31st. That many people caught COVID but didn't caution others that they had been exposed. There were probably others we didn't hear about who came down with it also.

This week I asked the doctor how long I had to quarantine. He told me five days unless I went out anyway. Apparently some people don't care. I'll be honest; I did stop to get my prescription but kept my distance and wore a mask. Is it so terrible to tell others they could have been exposed? Is it such a big secret that you're ill? I'm not meaning to complain to everyone how you feel, just inform them so they are aware that COVID has invaded your home and you hope it doesn't find them. We probably won't get rid of it. Surely it will slow down though if each of us does our part to inform others. Please be considerate if you have information others should know. I'll see you next week if all goes as planned. Stay well.
