Letter to the Editor: Laws stop only the law-abiding

We are again hearing calls for another "assault weapons" ban after Maine resident Robert Card, using an AR-15, began a shooting spree, killing 18 and wounding 13 individuals.

Maine has among the nation's strictest gun control laws. If gun control actually worked, Maine would be one of the nation's safest states. Alas, gun control laws do not work, except to make life safer for criminals. Had Card attempted his shooting spree in a "red state" where carry is legal, his shooting rampage might have been ended with fewer deaths.

It wasn't his AR-15 committing the murders, it was Card solely responsible, though the fake news media believes otherwise.

Gun control zealots want "red flag'' laws for removing guns from the hands of potentially violent criminals. Maine had such laws on the books, but Robert Card "slipped through the cracks," through federal, state and local authorities and even Card's parents expressed concerns over his mental health, yet nothing was done. Why was Card's rifle not confiscated under Maine's "red flag" law?

No laws work unless enforced and the FBI's database of felons is kept current. This was another failure of the system, but to anti-gunners, the only solution is disarming law-abiding citizens on the actions of a few violent criminals. Were Americans disarmed, mass shootings would become more prevalent since only the law-abiding obey the law. Criminals don't. Criminals would possess firearms illegally, leaving honest citizens as sitting ducks.

Why enact new laws when current laws are unenforced? The FBI's database must be kept current to make background checks effective.

With no due process for gun owners to regain unfairly confiscated firearms, any "red flag" law is unconstitutional as the Fourth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution – search and seizure – states the "right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers and effects against unreasonable searches and seizures shall not be violated and no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation and particularly describing the place to be searched and the persons or things to be seized."

Sadly, Joe Biden and his Democratic Party care nothing about the Constitution except when it benefits them and their political agenda.
