Letter to the Editor: Eating our fill

Many of the homeless will have full bellies today. They will probably be warm today. Will they have full bellies next week or next month? Winter is near. Many of the homeless have PTSD or have other mental or emotional issues. I could care if they are warm.

I could help.

But I'm eating my big Thanksgiving dinner.

Will everyone in the United States have a good Thanksgiving? What about the people in our country who suffered disasters from floods, tornadoes, and fires? What kind of Thanksgiving will the people of Maui have where 98 people died and 3,000 buildings were destroyed. Perhaps they will give thanks but also grieve.

My country is a mess. Our political system is in need of repair. Our educational system has broken down and failed both students and educators. Our infrastructure has not been kept in repair.

Several states have hazardous waste sites. Marion County, W.Va., has a radioactive site.

People throughout the world have holidays and festivals that are as important to them as our holidays are to us. So many are in distress. The United Nations Foundation indicates that more than 21 million people have been affected by the Russo-Ukraine war. The Hamas-Israeli war has affected many. All over the world there are civil wars and wars because of drugs.

There are at least 5.8 million refugees due to the Russo-Ukraine war. Millions more are refugees because of different wars or natural disasters. All these people have holidays and festivals important to them. Now their lives are torn apart.

There are so many disasters in the world. So many people are suffering. There were more than 1,000 tornadoes in my country in 2023. There were 75 deaths. The terrible 2023 earthquakes in Turkey/Syria killed more than 23,000 people and injured tens of thousands more. Many thousand buildings were destroyed.
