Letter to the Editor: Millions spent to rescue the rich

I can't quite put my finger on it, but I think there's something wrong with the millions of dollars and thousands of man hours that have been spent on the search and rescue/recovery of the deep sea submersible, Titan.

This expenditure is continuing to cover the finding of pieces of the vehicle. Four multi-millionaires/billionaires on board and one of their sons. Could that have been the difference between a multi-national search for them versus a much less intensive search for a shipwreck of immigrants with hundreds on board -- or others lost at sea?

I am very sorry for the loss of each and every life; but only a few can afford to take such excursions on the Titan and they full-well knew the risk. It's not just the millions of taxpayers' dollars that this operation cost; but it also involved the use of scarce and critical rescue equipment that could've been lost or damaged. There was also the possibility of the loss of rescuer life that sometimes happens with such a massive operation.
