Letter to the Editor: Taking care of business

(Letter to the Editor - Graphic Illustration/MetroCreativeConnection)

The most important business before President Biden and Congress is raising the debt ceiling. It was raised 3 times during the Trump administration with bipartisan support. The Republicans need to act responsibly – not push their own agenda instead of taking care of the nation’s business.

Mr. Trump gave a big tax cut to the wealthy but then the Republicans whine when President Biden tries to help you and I and passes an infrastructure bill (with Republican help) that is finally going to rebuild our roads, bridges and airports that have been neglected for years. Mitch seemed to like that bridge that will be built in his state.

Thanks to Mitch McConnell and Donald Trump, we have a Supreme Court that has destroyed the health care for a lot of women and girls in this country. The Republicans have a very narrow view of women’s health. They do not seem to care what happens to the mother before the child is born and they do not care afterward, or they would be providing a safety net and health care for those that cannot afford it.

“With a recent CDC report showing a significant increase in maternal mortality, Ohio health advocates say the state needs more prevention strategies, particularly when it comes to minority health. The CDC’s report showed a 40% increase in maternal mortality in 2021, the most recent data released by the National Vital Statistics System.” By Susan Tebben, Ohio Capital Journal, April 11, 2023.

And then there is the hysteria about needing a gun for protection. The “Right” has everyone so worked up and scared that they are shooting anything that moves. We have so many guns in this country that it is just a matter of time until most of us will be victims. It will take many years with everyone working together to bring about a decline in mass shootings and gun deaths. “Thoughts and prayers” will not do it!

It looks like our politicians will spend the next two years trying to get elected instead of taking care of the nation’s business. And it is no wonder most people “tune them out” instead of trying to understand the issues and vote for the best candidates. So far, the “minority” have been very successful in imposing their views on the “majority.” Hopefully, the majority can get their “act” together and elect those congressmen and women that will take care of the nation’s business and do the will of the people.
