Letter to the Editor: The fight for democracy

(Letter to the Editor - Graphic Illustration/MetroCreativeConnection)

Two years into the Biden presidency, and we are still fighting for democracy. It is disheartening to see a few in Brazil attempt to overthrow the will of the people, and to copy our insurrection of Jan. 6, 2021.

The Republican Party used to describe themselves as the “law and order” party. On Jan. 6, 2023, the Democrats seemed to be alone in their support and remembrance of the capitol police, who defended the capitol and Congressmen and women of both parties.

President Biden not only honored the capitol police, some of whom gave their lives to protect the capitol and Congressmen and women, but election workers, who were harassed and vilified for just doing their job.

Nancy Pelosi has been denigrated as well, despite being one of the best Speakers of the House. It remains to be seen whether Mr. McCarthy can do half as well, after letting the extreme right wing bully the majority, and make draconian rules that will bring nothing but chaos to the House.

The Republicans will continue to criticize President Biden on the mess at the border, crime, etc., and I will be surprised if they “reach across the aisle” to work with the Democrats. Not only do we need to pay our debts, but we need an immigration policy that will allow more immigration to fill the jobs that Americans won’t do, which will bring down inflation — lowering prices for you and me. And we will continue to see gun deaths rise, as long as Republicans insist that “guns don’t kill people.”

The “Republican Supreme Court” made a big mistake by getting rid of “Roe” and the Republican Party would do well to work with the Democrats to codify Roe. The women in this country will not accept the reversal of 50 years of settled law, and the government once again interfering with our personal health-care decisions.

We all want the same things in life. We are a diverse culture coming from different countries and comprising different religions. It’s just a matter of finding the middle ground and being willing to compromise for the sake of our friends on the other side, and for our democracy.
