Letter to the Editor: No right to restrict reading

(Letter to the Editor - Graphic Illustration/MetroCreativeConnection)

Wow! What a powerful piece of writing. You should be proud to have such a writer as Mr. Estep, and proud that the newspaper you publish has the courage to afford him his platform.

I’m white, heterosexual, and Christian, but my Jesus taught me to accept and love everyone, without regard to gender identity or sexual preference.

The Nazis burned books, and from my earliest recollection, I was taught that suppression of expression was a bad thing; that I was blessed to be born in a country where such conduct was prohibited. I doubt that Mrs. Kuhl supported the “Defund the Police” movement; nor did I.

Now, however, she vows publicly to “Defund the Library,” simply because the library has had the gumption to publicly offer a book with a viewpoint differing from her own. My wife and I encouraged our children to read everything they could get their hands on, but we exercised parental oversight. We never presupposed, however, to exercise such oversight over other people’s children, and Mrs. Kuhl and her cohorts shouldn’t either.
