Letter to the Editor: Defending letter writer

A frequent writer to the editor on Feb. 27 referred to a letter of Feb. 20. He says that writer pointed out that Biden's supposed weakness gave Putin the opportunity to threaten Ukraine and China clearance to threaten Taiwan. He defends Biden by saying Russia has been threatening Ukraine for ten years, and China has been threatening Taiwan for 70 years. If Russia has been threatening Ukraine for 10 years why did they just happen to choose this time to attack them? As to China threatening Taiwan, the fact that they have been doing that for 70 years doesn't remove the fact that China is closer than ever to taking them and probably will do so within two years.
The current writer then says that Trump gave Iran the opening again to go nuclear. He pointed out that the U.N. and all of Europe, including Russia and most of the Middle East had endorsed the treaty that "tightly restricted Iran's nuclear activities." Look at the situation that existed at the time.
The U.N. was in lockstep with the United States since Obama was doing all he could to trash the United States. Russian and most of the Middle East hated us and voted for the treaty which actually gave Iran a time when they could continue to work toward developing a nuclear bomb. They were not afraid that Iran would bomb them.
It is true that new techniques of drilling have been developing for some time. However, when Trump took office, we were producing 8 million barrels of oil but production was declining slightly. In two years, as a result of the positive climate of the Trump administration, we were producing 12 million barrels.
Finally, one statement the writer made was totally ridiculous. He said we are still energy independent. If we are, why, after Biden effectively trashed the energy industry, are we buying oil from Russia and Iran and begging OPEC to give us more!?
