* Farm families don't seek out a lot of recognition -- they're too busy -- but a few of them were honored last week, anyway. The Little Kanawha Conservation District recognized farms in Calhoun, Ritchie, Roane, Wirt and Wood Counties. The Townsend Farm in Belleville was recognized as a Sesquicentennial Farm and the Wood County Co-Operator of the Year. It's a generational operation run today by Sheila and Kevin Townsend, who manage 131 acres of the original farm to raise beef cattle, market hogs, hay, corn and soybeans. Other farms in our region that earned a nod were the Riggs Farm in Wirt County, the Helmick Farm in Calhoun County, the Garrison and Ewing farms in Wood County, the Depue and Parsons farms in Roane County, and the Nelson Family Farm in Ritchie County. The saying goes "No farms, no food." We might add, "No farm FAMILIES, no food." Thank you, folks, for all you do for the rest of us.
* The Boys and Girls Club of Parkersburg hosted a successful event last weekend, with its inaugural Cash Bash. The fundraiser featured plenty of ways for attendees to help support the organization (and the kids it serves). "We thought this might be a good way for people to get together, just have a good time with each other, and maybe win some money right before the holidays," said CEO Darlene Murphy. A little fun and a little funding made the night a win-win for the club. Nice job, on thinking outside the box to make it happen.
