High Points of the Valley

* Mid-Ohio Valley residents responded once again to the call for food and financial support for local food pantries -- this time Old Man Rivers and the DAV Chapter 32 food pantries in Wood County. During Saturday's Chick Crites Annual food drive hosted by the News and Sentinel in partnership with the Mid-Ohio Valley Platoon of the Marine Corps Veterans Association and other local veterans groups, hundreds of dollars and plenty of food was collected. And, if the turnout was a little lower than what we'd hoped, we know it's a sign that too many of those who might have been in a financial position to help at this time last year are now struggling, themselves. Still we are grateful to those who did stop by and offer whatever support they could. Thank you, folks!

* That wonderful smell wafting through Belpre Sunday was from the 48th annual Belpre Lions Club Apple Butter Stir Off in Civitan Park Sunday, with the help of Pioneer Presbyterian Church of Belpre. "We hope to have 200 gallons of apple butter," said Tom Webster, with Pioneer Presbyterian. "We start at about 7 a.m. and we finish (cooking) around 4 p.m." That's a day full of fun, fundraising and entertainment as the community gathered to help support the effort. Because it is the Lions Club, the day was not complete without vision screenings, courtesy of Emily Weatherford of Belpre Eye Care Associates. Jolene Reeder, president of the Belpre Lions Club, was quick to note "Pioneer Presbyterian Church does all the apple butter stirring and selling themselves, but we bring in the vendors and entertainment." In other words, such a delicious day does not come together without lots of help. Kudos to who everyone who made it happen.
