* Congratulations, to two Boys and Girls Club of Parkersburg staffers and a former board member who received statewide honors recently. Darlene Murphy was named CEO of the Year by her colleagues, Vienna site unit director Crystal Barker received the Staff Member of the Year award, and former board member Wes Tracewell was inducted into the West Virginia Boys and Girls Club Hall of Fame. Given the importance of the work done by the organization, it is encouraging to know such folks are working with kids right here in the Mid-Ohio Valley. "I'm proud of the vision we've set for the Club, the progress we've made as an organization, and especially the opportunity I've had to advocate for our young people and the Boys and Girls Club movement locally, statewide and nationally alongside some incredible Club professionals," Murphy said. Nonprofits need a good mix of skilled leaders, both as CEOs and directors AND on their boards. Committed and active board members can sometimes make the difference when nonprofits face a challenge. Again, well done, to Barker, Murphy and Tracewell. And thank you, for all you do.
* The Wood County Commission declared this National Disability Employment Awareness Month at its Thursday meeting last week, "Celebrating Value and Talent." "We want to recognize that people with developmental disabilities can work in the community just like everyone else does," said Doug Hess, chief operating manager for The Arc of the Mid-Ohio Valley. The commissioners' proclamation was important: "We call upon employers, schools, and community organizations in Wood County to observe this month with appropriate programs and activities, and to advance the message that people with disabilities bring value and talent to our workplaces and communities throughout the year."
