* Friends of the Joseph Barker House continue to gain support for renovation efforts including timber replacement in walls and total rebuilding of other parts of the structure. The project, expected to be completed by December, has received $100,000 through the Ohio Controlling Board for interior and exterior renovations of the home. Judge Joseph Barker Jr.'s house was built by his father in 1832 and made it to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. Barker's family was among the early New Englanders to build in Washington County. "The Barker House has significant, historical meaning for the people of Washington County, and I'm glad to see resources allocated to ensure it continues to be a valued part of the community for future generations," said state Rep. Kevin Ritter, R-Marietta.
* It is no small feat to become a national champion at anything. The Phoenix Twirlers have represented the Mid-Ohio Valley by doing it TWICE. The National Baton Twirling Association held its Primary Small Halftime National Championships earlier this month, and in addition to team success, several soloists earned national placements, too. "Our athletes continue to raise the bar every season," coaches said. "We couldn't be more proud of the dedication, teamwork, and heart they demonstrated throughout the week. Their success is a direct reflection of the hard work they have put in all season." We're proud of them, too. Congratulations!
* July 18 put a wrap on the annual Wood County 4-H and FFA Summer Showcase and Livestock Sale, with participants showing off the results of a lot of hard work. The young people who enter their livestock and still projects into this showcase show an impressive level of enthusiasm and dedication. And their work is a reminder of the importance of the lessons they are learning, given how much the rest of us will depend upon them. Congratulations to all the participants!
