Support: More funding needed for victims of violence

The West Virginia Rural Domestic Violence, Dating Violence, Sexual Assault and Stalking Program has provided grant funding for some important efforts in the state. More than $700,000 will be distributed to programs ranging from the West Virginia Coalition Against Domestic Violence Inc., which serves rural communities across the state, to more focused efforts such as the Branches domestic violence shelter in Huntington.

These organizations provide victim advocacy, help in finding resources, housing assistance, court accompaniment, and crisis intervention, among other supports.

Knowing that kind of safety net exists is critical for those fighting for survival in horrific situations.

According to the West Virginia Coalition Against Domestic Violence, a Sept. 14, 2024 snapshot showed 110 hotline calls received in a 24-hour period, 369 victims served but 8 unmet requests — purportedly due to lack of funds.

The organization notes: “Domestic violence victim services provide advocacy for domestic violence survivors in court for protective orders; for practical needs to make a safe home (such as food boxes or household items); for survivor assistance to find jobs and permanent housing they can afford; for help planning how to safely exit the abusive relationship; and more.”

Count yourself lucky if you’ve never thought about needing such support, let alone had a difficult time figuring out where to turn for help in the more remote corners of our state.

State efforts to provide grant funding are an important start. Let us hope lawmakers will be able to find more room in the budget for even better support of vulnerable and struggling Mountain State residents for the next round.

Starting at $3.70/week.
