Looking for a way to enjoy the beautiful weather and explore our state’s natural wonders? The timing of National Trails Day couldn’t be more perfect.

On Saturday, parks across our state will be hosting events including guided hikes and trail clean-ups, as part of the American Hiking Society’s effort to spur people to get outside, connect with new communities, and both enjoy and take care of our parks and trails.

“We are excited to invite every West Virginian and all of the Mountain State’s visitors to take part in National Trails Day and celebrate the incredible benefits our trail systems provide for recreation and relaxation,” said West Virginia State Parks Acting Chief Dillard Price. “Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or just starting out, these guided events are a wonderful opportunity to experience the natural beauty of West Virginia and help ensure these trails remain vibrant for future generations.”

There are more than trails at our state parks, of course. For example, both guided hikes at North Bend State Park Saturday begin at the Nature Center. Visitors of all ages can learn a little something if they enjoy some time there, too.

At North Bend, there is a hike to Tunnel 13 at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, and a hike on the Overhanging Rock Trail at 2 p.m. Bring your water, the right footwear and be ready to check for ticks before you get back in your car, if you don’t use insect repellant.

As guests explore our parks for their wonderful trails, they’ll also get a look at the campgrounds, picnic areas, recreational opportunities and maybe even dine in one of the lodges. If you’ve lived within easy driving distance of your “local” park for years but never done any of those things, Saturday is your excuse.

Sure, hiking can be a bit of a cardio workout, depending on the trail, but it can also bring incomparable mental health benefits. The National Park Service points out hiking reduces stress, calms anxiety, can lower the risk of depression and even improve your sensory perception.

Perhaps Saturday can be the start of a summer filled with healthy exploration. Get out there, leave no trace, and enjoy!
