Support: Fashion show offers help, inspiration
Too many in our community know what it is like to face a cancer diagnosis and wonder where they will find the support they need. Fortunately, we live in a region where that support is everywhere — concentrated in efforts such as the Memorial Health Foundation’s annual fashion show, which this year raised more than $142,000.
“This is the 21st fashion show, and it’s always been to help support patients right here locally,” foundation Executive Director Jarrett Stull said. “For the last several years, it’s been our cancer patients supporting our breast health initiative and our cancer patient emergency fund.”
Money raised helps patients undergoing treatment with expenses such as medication, equipment and transportation.
More than 1,000 turned out to the masquerade ball-themed event this past weekend to make sure that support continues.
In addition to raising money, the event also gives patients and survivors a chance to walk the runway as they show off their strength and resilience.
“Last year I was still doing chemo, and they asked me, and I was really nervous about walking the stage,” said Tracy Cornell. “But it was so empowering.”
Over the years, the event has raised more than $1 million for those on their cancer journeys.
“It’s such a special event all the way around,” Stull said. “It’s a big community event that brings together a lot of people to make this successful.”
It is an inspiring effort — a night of glitz and glamour that reminds us how important it is to be there for one another in the rough patches. Mid-Ohio Valley families are grateful for the volunteers and organizers who make it happen, and the donors who pour what they can into making sure those facing a cancer diagnosis know: They are not alone.
