Safety: Special events offer responsible disposal
If you’ve been waiting for a chance to clear out your cabinets, garage and basement clutter, and maybe some of what’s been hanging out in the shed for too long, Saturday is your chance.
It is National Prescription Takeback Day and Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day in Washington County.
It’s been a few years, but the SouthEastern Ohio Joint Solid Waste Management District is again sponsoring the hazardous waste collection effort from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at American Styrenics Employee Park, 17401 State Route 7. Residents of Muskingum, Monroe, Morgan, Guernsey and Noble counties can take advantage of the collection, too.
For this event, residents can get rid of insecticides, herbicides, pesticides, rat poison, antifreeze, medicines, used oil, watch batteries, transmission fluid, household cleaners, auto batteries, grease, fluorescent light bulbs, paint and paint thinner, gasoline, batteries, radiator cleaner, creosote, bleach, moth balls, pool chemicals, wood strippers, varnish, ammonia, degreasers, photo chemicals, propane cylinders, paint, stains, solvents, kerosene, brake fluid, engine cleaners, metal polish, sealant, fertilizers, oil filters, diesel, glue, lighter fluid, automotive freon and adhesives.
Think of all the space you’ll free up — responsibly.
Meanwhile, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, medications — even syringes, patches and liquids — can be dropped off for collection at points across the Mid-Ohio Valley — on both sides of the river. To find your closest collection point, type your zip code in here: https://www.dea.gov/takebackday.
“Why turn in your unused medications? Drugs can be stolen and sold illegally, children and pets could be poisoned if they find and swallow drugs, and unused medications are environmental toxins, as flushing them down the toilet or sink can contaminate our water and soil,” said Cathy Harper of the Right Path, which helped organize efforts in Washington County.
Saturday is the time to kick start spring cleaning in a way that lets you also be safer, a better steward of the environment and maybe even make room for more stuff. Don’t miss it!
