* Larger employers are making important investments in local communities, as the Cafaro Company has announced a multi-million-dollar planned renovation project at Grand Central Mall. The mall’s director of corporate communications, Joe Bell, said the effort will significantly modernize the mall and make it “a facility in which you can be proud as a community.” Anthony Cafaro Jr., co-president of the Cafaro Company, said, “The Mid-Ohio Valley deserves upgrades, deserves something better, and we’re here to deliver on that.” In fact, Vienna Mayor Chad Emrick said he believes “The greatest days for the Grand Central Mall are still to come.” Those are exciting expectations set for a project that appears to hold the promise of making the mall an even more attractive destination for people across the region, as Cafaro also talked about filling vacant storefronts with a mix of tenants. It’s a lot to look forward to; and we are fortunate to have community partners who are looking to the future for our valley.

* The Dwight O. Conner Planetarium at Parkersburg High School is an important reminder of this region’s commitment to science and space education — going back to the 1960s. Because of support from organizations such as the Minnite Family Charitable Fund, the Parkersburg High School Foundation is about to make sure the planetarium remains up to date. “We’re grateful to the Minnite family for their generosity,” Fred Earley, Parkersburg High School Foundation board president, said. “The support of the Minnite Family Charitable Fund allows us to move forward with the much-needed updates to the PHS Planetarium, ensuring it continues to serve as a place of discovery, inspiration and learning for students and the community for years to come.” With additions such as high-definition digital projection, modern seating and lighting, advanced astronomy software and improved sound and accessibility, the upgrades will help ensure the planetarium serves its purpose for years to come.
