* Vienna is welcoming a new police chief, as Lt. Josh Cole has been selected to take the helm. He will be sworn in Thursday. “Lt. Cole has consistently exemplified integrity, accountability and forward-thinking leadership,” Mayor Chad Emrick said. “I am confident that under his direction, the Vienna Police Department will continue to uphold the highest standards of public safety while strengthening its connection with the community.” For his part, Cole said, “I am deeply honored by the opportunity to serve as Vienna’s next chief of police. I look forward to working alongside our dedicated officers, staff and community members to continue building trust, promoting safety, and serving with integrity.” In the search for a successor to retiring Chief Carl Powell, Vienna officials said Cole “rose to the top.” Congratulations, sir!
* Cherish Stavrakis’ students at Jackson Middle School showed a lot of heart earlier this month when they designed and created Valentine’s Day boxes for younger kids at Olivia and Friends Childhood and Development Center. Once they got to know a little about the youngsters, the students went all out, with boxes that had functioning drawers, lights and even games built in. “It’s such a fun experience,” Stavrakis said. “I always have more students wishing to help than are needed.” Development Center owner Samantha Ash says the projects are one of her favorite traditions of the year. “When they see their box for the first time, their jaws literally drop,” Ash said. “They feel seen. They feel special. Many of them keep their boxes long after Valentine’s Day is over. It’s such a boost to their self-esteem to know someone took the time to learn about them and create something just for them,” she said. Thank you, to the middle schoolers who made that happen. Well done.
