Opportunity: Miracle League is a worthy cause

Organizers of the Miracle League of the Mid-Ohio Valley are aiming for some lofty goals, both for their organization and the communities it serves. With the determination to demonstrate baseball is for everyone, the league put on a second demonstration game over the weekend in Parkersburg’s City Park.
Facilities at the park worked well enough for a single game, but the league has ambitions for a full season’s worth of games on its own fully accessible field.
“The Miracle League is a barrier-free baseball league for individuals with disabilities,” said Amber Stover, one of the league’s organizers. “We’re playing on turf right now, but an ideal Miracle League field is poured rubber. So it makes it so easy for kids with walkers or wheelchairs or crutches, they don’t have to worry about anything that could hinder their movement.”
Support for such an effort will be financial, yes — and donations and sponsorships for the newly designated 501(c)(3) are certainly welcomed. But there are volunteering opportunities as well. Back in June, the organization said it was looking for high school baseball and softball players interested in becoming “buddies” to the Miracle League athletes. Surely coaches have flooded the group with messages offering such support.
Other help is needed as well, of course. The opportunity to provide that help should be welcomed.
Those who are able to support with their money or their time and effort should not delay in moving this important organization toward its goal.
It’s true, everyone deserves a chance to play. Consider what YOU can do to help make that happen.
