* Belpre Area Chamber of Commerce organizers put together a fabulous annual dinner to celebrate its 95th year last week. In addition to celebrating the achievements of local businesses and learning about the career paths of some of our local standouts, the event — themed Cruising First Class — was a lot of fun. Good food, a few captain’s hats and LOTS of corny jokes made for an uplifting evening that should inspire new entrepreneurs and long-time businesses alike. Regarding the BACC’s mission, Executive Director Karen Waller said “I think we’re trying to make sure that we are open for business. We’re retaining what we have and helping people come here to locate or assist people in their needs to grow their business.” They are doing an excellent job. Congratulations to the evening’s award-winners, and to the chamber.
* Most of us understand the same old reading, writing and arithmetic that got us through our school days just doesn’t cut it for today’s students as technology evolves so rapidly. That is why events such as last week’s visit from the WVU STEAM Technical Assistance Center to Jackson Middle School’s seventh graders are so important. “It gives them the content information that they need, but also connects the lesson to careers,” said STEAM-TAC specialist Melissa Bane. “So it helps the teachers explore the career clusters in middle school and high school, and gives them all kinds of ideas of how they can connect that they wouldn’t normally know.” What a fantastic opportunity for our students and teachers. Here’s hoping such interactions only increase in number as Mid-Ohio Valley young people prepare themselves for a career landscape we can only imagine.
