* The Boys & Girls Club of Parkersburg celebrated its 60th anniversary in style last week with its Great Futures Gala. The organization is making such important strides that the president and CEO of the national organization was on hand to help celebrate. Jim Clark said when he visited the main club location on Mary Street in Parkersburg he "knew within a couple of minutes of walking in the door what kind of experience (the kids) were having," and he praised local CEO Lynn Reins and the club's board. Hundreds of local children are served daily by the Parkersburg Club, and community support is helping the organization expand its mission. "Today more than ever, as a nation, we must focus on our kids, the kids that need it most," Clark said during the gala. The Boys & Girls Club of Parkersburg is doing just that. Here's to another 60 years and more!
* Waverly Activity Center gave away 36,000 pounds of apples last week, after a donation by the Food Donation Center as part of the Farmlink Project. The event was an immediate success, as nonprofit organizations and churches from all over the region stopped by to collect apples by the bag, box or pallet. Though the event had been planned through Thursday, everything was gone by 4 p.m. Wednesday. There is an old saying about seeing a need and meeting it. The Waverly Activity Center clearly met an urgent need, and made a difference for a number of local groups -- and therefore the people they serve. Thank you, folks.
