It’s been more than 20 years, but state lawmakers have finally returned to Parkersburg for an interim session that will feature plenty of exposure to local sights, schools and industry. More than just a chance for members of the legislature to learn more about the Mid-Ohio Valley, the visit also means approximately 200 people will be filling hotel rooms such as those at the Blennerhassett Hotel downtown and eating a local restaurants. “Everyone has jumped in and Parkersburg is ready to shine,” said Greater Parkersburg Convention and Visitors Bureau President and CEO Mark Lewis. As we welcome lawmakers to our communities, we hope they will leave with better insight into not only our challenges, but our successes. Those who made such a an opportunity possible are to be commended.

It took almost 80 years, but Parkersburg resident Ray H. Brown finally got the Bronze Star he earned for his role in the Battle of the Bulge and Operation Varsity during World War II. Brown was a corporal in the 17th Airborne, 193rd Glider Infantry, 1st Battalion, Company A, in the U.S. Army from 1943-1945. “I’m so thankful that we were able to correct, after 79 years, getting your record straight and all that you’ve done and the service you’ve given to our country,” said U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin, I-W.Va. “You were in the thick of things, buddy, and we want to make sure that you’re recognized properly.” We forget sometimes there are genuine heroes quietly living among us. How wonderful to be reminded by someone like Brown after he received the medal that was so sorely overdue.
