Bibbee: Councilman set a high bar for service

Vienna City Council is reeling from the loss of yet another dedicated public servant after the passing of City Councilman Roger Bibbee last week.
For many Mid-Ohio Valley residents, the news arrived in the form of an announcement from the Vienna Volunteer Fire Department, of which Bibbee had been a part for nearly 50 years.
His service to the community as a council member began in 2000, but he joined the Vienna VFD back in 1975, eventually becoming deputy chief. He served actively for 27 years and then resigned with an honorary membership, through which he continued to serve and support the department.
In fact, his work on council included serving as the liaison for the fire department.
Vienna Fire Chief Steve Scholl said Bibbee did everything he could for the department in his various roles.
"I've been on council 24 years and most of you know that my priority ... is public safety," Bibbee said during a meeting last year.
It seemed he never wavered in that commitment.
No doubt many in Vienna echo Scholl's sentiment that Bibbee will be greatly missed.
Now, Vienna again begins the work of filling another seat, and again it will be a challenge to find a candidate with the dedication to public service and the people of Vienna demonstrated by Bibbee.
While Bibbee will be sorely missed, it is a comfort to hope those who follow in his footsteps will be working to aim for those same high standards.
