Service: Shearlock fit to lead WCVSC forward

Many local veterans know there is incredible support available to them through the Washington County Veterans Services Commission. A new leader appears poised to strengthen that support and perhaps reach even more of those who have served our country in the military.
Retired U.S. Army Master Sgt. Darren Shearlock had already been helping veterans in his role at West Virginia University at Parkersburg, first as an American history teacher and then as the school's veterans services advocate. Now he takes the helm as executive director of the Washington County Veterans Services Commission.
Shearlock's is the kind of journey to the Mid-Ohio Valley so many of us are eager to hear. He was not born and raised here, but there was enough to attract his and his wife's attention - first as visitors and eventually as permanent residents - to make him want to do more than just live here. He wanted to serve in vital roles.
He will be able to do just that through the WCVSC.
"Here it's a more holistic way to help," Shearlock said. "It's not only helping with further education but also VA compensation, veterans' widows benefits, transportation to medical facilities and many other things."
But Shearlock is aware not everyone who has earned it takes advantage of that kind of support. There are outreach efforts in the works, but it is important for those who are simply reluctant to take advantage to understand:
"You're not taking away from any other veteran by using what you're entitled to," he said. "The more people who use the services, you're making the system stronger."
Further, Shearlock is right to remind those veterans who don't have a need spring to mind:
"There's no expiration date on an oath," Shearlock said. "And if there's nothing you need ... then come help us help the others."
With such a background in education, outreach, dedication to service AND as a person who chose to put down roots in the Mid-Ohio Valley, Shearlock appears to be an excellent fit to lead and propel the WCVSC.
