* In an emergency, those who are trained in CPR can make the difference between those to whom first responders make it in time and those they do not. In rural areas, if a cardiac emergency occurs emergency responders could be 30 to 45 minutes away. The more people who know CPR, the better the outcomes from sudden cardiac arrest can be, said Michelle Loehr, executive director of West Virginia/Blue Ridge Virginia region for the American Heart Association. That's why a grant to the AHA from the Highmark West Virginia Charitable Fund for Health is so important. With the $110,000 awarded last week, the AHA can further its public awareness campaign about CPR. "We are proud to once again partner with Highmark West Virginia for this important and, potentially lifesaving, campaign," Loehr said. We are fortunate to have such wonderful community partners working toward that goal.
* 2006 Marietta High School graduate Lauren Blauvelt is one of Time magazine's 100 Most Influential People of 2024. She was part of a group recognized by time for their historic work to get the Ohio Issue 1 abortion rights amendment put on the ballot and adopted last fall. Organizing an effort that united enough Ohioans to change the state constitution is a remarkable feat.
* Each year the Local School Improvement Council Showcases remind us of the good things happening in Wood County Schools. The talent, innovation, creativity, instruction and leadership on display is inspiring. The students seem to enjoy having the chance to show off a little, too. "That's my favorite one," said Williamstown STEAM Club member Luke Seago, as he demonstrated a battery-powered car that had just crossed over a purple pad, causing it to do a 360 spin. Thank goodness our students have such a variety of opportunities in our public schools.
