High Points of the Valley

High Points of the Valley (MetroCreativeConnection)

* First responders, public officials, business owners, nonprofits, churches, volunteers ... just about everyone who could help HAS helped over the past few days as flood waters inundated our valley. Whether it was filling sandbags, moving items to higher ground or scraping out mud and beginning the clean-up process, people took care of one another and continue to do so. We may not feel very fortunate as the effects of the flooding continue to reveal themselves, but we can at least be grateful we live in a place where no one is left to fend for themselves in a time like this.

* It may seem perfectly ordinary, but last week's meeting of Parkersburg City Council acting as the Committee of the Whole was a good example of government doing what it is supposed to do. The group met, discussed a proposal, heard perspectives ranging from constituent input to law enforcement and came together on a compromise that removed all-terrain vehicles and side-by-sides from a proposed ordinance that would now only govern golf carts on some city streets. No drama, no political theater -- just public servants working together to develop a plan that will best serve ALL constituents. Boring, maybe, but refreshingly so. And exactly the way it should be.

* Wood County Solid Waste Authority reminded us last week that as we carry out our spring cleaning, we should keep reuse and recycling in mind. "Anything we can keep out of the landfill and recycle is good," said Sarah Robinson, director of the SWA. There are plenty of cleanup and recycling events planned to help with that effort. But if you're not sure what can be done with a particular item, call Robinson at 304-424-1873 to find out.
