* Another sure sign of spring is the arrival of annual Easter egg hunts throughout the Mid-Ohio Valley, including one held Thursday at Parkersburg South High School. The colorful activities are another reminder how fortunate we are to have those willing to organize such events for local children (and their families).
* Congratulations to a West Virginia institution that celebrated its 185th anniversary Sunday. United Bank has been part of our communities for so long it is known as "West Virginia's bank." "United Bank is the community bank for the markets it serves, especially here in West Virginia. As we look to the future, providing excellence in service continues to be at the heart of what we do, a tradition that has been passed down since the bank's founding," Julie Gurtis, president of United Bank, said. Kudos on the milestone, folks.
* Speaking of milestones, Reno's Donald Dennis, 80, marked decades of scouting when he received the 70-year service pin from the Boy Scouts of America. It's a remarkable achievement and shows an inspiring level of dedication. "I want to keep on hiking no matter how steep," Dennis said. "I'll be back for a 75-year pin and an 80-year pin after that." With determination like that, there is no doubt he will.
* Ravenswood Middle School student Alex Waskey won first place in the Behavioral and Social Science category at the 2024 West Virginia Science and Engineering Fair in Charleston earlier this month. His project, "Does candy make you smarter?" might have been the envy of plenty of other kids, but it's worth noting he roped in 54 others as test subjects. Well done, and congratulations.
