* When community partners band together, area nonprofits win. A recent example is the announcement by the Marietta Area Community Foundation that its Nonprofit Challenge is now open to all Washington County nonprofits; and because of its partnership with Superior Toyota Hyundai, there is now $30,000 up for grabs. Between Nov. 1 and 16, a Penny War will allow donors to deposit money into participating nonprofits' jugs at the Community Foundation at 100 Putnam St., Marietta. In addition to first through fifth place awards, there will also be awards for First Friday Donor's Choice, Superior's Choice - Best Decorated Jug and recognition for Most Donors on National Philanthropy Day, Most Bills Collected and Most Online Donations. It is a fantastic and fun way for the community to support its favorite nonprofits. (And, let's be honest, they all do incredible work). Organizations should not miss the chance to sign up; and donors should take advantage of the competition to help multiply the good.
* Kanawha Elementary students are fortunate to be part of the school's GAINZ -- Growth, Attitude, Impactful, Noteworthy and Zeal -- program. "Kanawha GAINZ is our way to teach social and emotional learning," Principal Matt Null said. "This particular skill is called 'Honor Your Neighbor,' and that's what we wanted to do today." Null was referring to the students' celebration of the 100th birthday of neighbor and friend Harold Nelson, who was born Oct. 15, 1923. "He is the first neighbor of our school (Nelson has lived in his home since 1954. The school was built in 1961)," Null told the students gathered in the gym to wish Nelson a happy birthday. "We thought it would be awesome to have Mr. Nelson in and sing him happy birthday for his 100th birthday." Happy birthday, sir; and well done, to Kanawha Elementary and its students.
