* Five-year-old Brooks Wenzel of Whipple is set to be pictured among the more than 500 photos in a Times Square video presentation by the National Down Syndrome Society in September. The Shenandoah Elementary School kindergartener was chosen from approximately 2,400 photos submitted worldwide. After presentations for the event, Brooks' team, the Brooks Brigade, will walk in the Buddy Walk. "We're very excited," his mother Sara said. "A little nervous about taking a 5-year-old boy to the big city, but I think it will work out well." Have fun, Brooks! And, congratulations.
* 100 Women Who Care in the Mid-Ohio Valley says it has raised $50,685 since its establishment in 2021. Organizations that have benefited from the group's innovative approach to philanthropy include: the North Star Child Advocacy Center (The Children's Listening Place), the Latrobe Street Mission, the Gospel Mission Food Pantry, Kelly's Closet, River City Farmers Market, Special Olympics of Washington County, Jon Six Food Ministry Inc. and House to Home operated by the Parkersburg Area Coalition for the Homeless, the latest grant in 2023. House to Home will install a new shower and bathroom at the shelter. "While bathing is something that most take for granted, when you're homeless or couch surfing, your ability to bathe and address hygiene needs can be lost," Shelly Rose, a House to Home representative, said.
* High school football season has returned to the Mid-Ohio Valley. And while we hope everyone -- adults and students -- will behave themselves and be respectful during the games, it is wonderful to know the spirit that accompanies those Friday night lights is back. Good luck, to all teams, bands, cheer squads … and all those booster groups keeping the concession stands running. Here's to another fantastic football season in the valley.
