Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down

UP: To Federal Energy Regulatory Commission approval of the transfer of Pleasants Power from Texas-based Energy Transition and Environmental Management to California-based Omnis Fuel Technologies. "After consideration, it is concluded that the Proposed Transaction is consistent with the public interest and is authorized," wrote Amery S. Pore, director of FERC's Division of Electric Power Regulation - West. Indeed, it appears it will be in the public's interest; and FERC is to be commended for so quickly reaching the decision.

UP: To the declaration of this past Sunday as Ray Brown Day in Parkersburg, in honor of the World War II veteran's 100th birthday. Brown was in both the Battle of the Bulge in Belgium and Operation Varsity, when more than 21,000 glider infantry and paratroopers landed on the German side of the Rhine River. He described the assault on Dead Man's Ridge as "the coldest day, the hottest day, the shortest day, the longest day" of his life. Most of us can't fathom what this man has seen and was willing to do for our country. In fact, because of him and so many like him, most of us will never have to. Thank you, sir. And happy birthday!

UP: To William Yannitell, of Scout Troop 207, who has received the Glenn A. and Melinda W. Adams National Eagle Scout Service Project of the Year Award for his Eagle Scout candidate project creating the Battlefield Cross Memorial Monument at Gold Star Park in Marietta. "I am grateful for receiving the Muskingum Valley Council Eagle Scout Service Project of the Year Award, and it means volumes to me; however, I am more grateful for the path along the way," Yannitell said. And we are glad to have such a remarkable young person in our midst. Congratulations!
